Office chairs made in Europe
Plant by plant, from EPDs, certificates and product sheets rather than marketing. Some American designs turn out to be built in France, Portugal and Poland; one famous one is built in England.
Updated By The Best Office Chairs Europe editorial team13 sources
Of the 38 chairs in our register, 19 task chairs are documented as made inside the EU for the European market, in Germany, Sweden, France, Portugal and Poland; HÅG's chairs come from Røros in Norway, which is in the EEA but not the EU. Herman Miller's European Aeron, Embody, Sayl and Setu come from Melksham, UK, outside the EU.
German makers dominate by number; Steelcase builds its European chairs in Sarrebourg, France, and Haworth in Portugal and Poland. Britain has its own cluster of task-chair factories beyond Melksham, from South Wales to Yorkshire, covered in office chairs made in the UK.

Two caveats. The Steelcase Leap and Haworth Fern are American designs, but for a European buyer they are EU-made products. And "made in" usually means final assembly: Herman Miller's EPDs, for example, note that components come from external suppliers.
What does "made in Europe" actually mean?
- Final assembly vs components. A chair has a gas lift, castors, a mechanism and plastic parts that may come from anywhere. Vitra's EPD speaks of "final assembly" in Weil am Rhein; Interstuhl's group runs plants in Germany, Slovakia and Mexico and only its EVERY page says "Manufactured in Germany".
- EU vs Europe. Norway (HÅG, Varier's head office) is in the European Economic Area; the UK (Herman Miller's Melksham plant) left the EU in 2020. Buying from outside the EU can mean import VAT and, unless origin rules are met, customs duty. See buying across borders.
- Where the evidence comes from. We prefer documents with legal or audit weight: EPDs (which must state the place of production), GS and ISO certificates (which name the site), and maker statements. Where a maker says nothing, the profile says "not published".

Questions buyers ask
Is the Herman Miller Aeron made in Europe?
The Aeron sold in Europe is made in Melksham, in the United Kingdom, according to Herman Miller’s Europe-scope EPDs. The UK is in Europe but outside the EU, which matters for customs when you buy from the EU.
Where is the Steelcase Leap made for Europe?
Steelcase’s 2026 EMEA brochures say the Leap, Gesture, Series 2, Karman and Please sold in Europe are made in Sarrebourg, France.
Which office chair brands are European?
Among the makers we profile, Interstuhl, Wilkhahn, Sedus, Löffler and Dauphin are German; Vitra is Swiss with seating assembled in Germany; HÅG and RH (Flokk) and Varier are Norwegian; Kinnarps is Swedish. Steelcase, Haworth, Herman Miller and Humanscale are American companies, three of which build their European chairs in Europe.
