Office chairs made in the UK

British task chairs are mostly sold through dealers, which is why they are hard to find. Here is who states UK manufacture, and what they publish.

Updated By The Best Office Chairs Europe editorial team30 sources

Seven makers name a UK factory for their office chairs: Herman Miller in Melksham, which builds the European Aeron, Embody, Sayl and Setu; Orangebox in South Wales; Boss Design in Dudley; Pledge in Leighton Buzzard; Flexiform in Bradford; PSI Seating in Blackburn; and Chairplan in Hertfordshire. Only Herman Miller sells online with published prices.

This page uses one rule: a chair counts as UK-made only when its maker says so, or names a UK factory, on its own website or in a verified document. A UK head office is not enough. That rule removes some familiar names, including ergonomic dealers that sell chairs made elsewhere.

Orangebox belongs to a larger group: it appears in Steelcase's list of brands, and Steelcase itself has been owned by HNI Corporation since December 2025. Ownership does not change where a chair is built, but it explains why an Orangebox chair can share a dealer's showroom with a French-made Steelcase.

What do UK-made task chairs offer on paper?

One or more current task chairs from each maker that publishes figures. All values are the makers' own; "not stated" means we could not find it on the maker's site.

Orangebox's Do is the odd one out in mechanism terms: its synchro recline deliberately has no lock, "to encourage movement throughout the day". Pledge and Boss publish 150 kg ratings for the Kind Task and Lily. Herman Miller's chairs are in our chair register with full data and EU prices; the others are not yet, because their makers do not publish prices or complete sheets.

Check the seat height against EN 1335

Several British sheets start their seat-height range high. EN 1335-1:2020 asks a Type A chair to cover 400–520 mm, and even the most relaxed Type C must reach down to 430 mm. On the published ranges above:

  • Orangebox Do (445–575 mm): spans no EN 1335-1:2020 Type in full.
  • Boss Design Lily (450–570 mm): spans no EN 1335-1:2020 Type in full.
  • Boss Design Trinetic (400–520 mm): spans Type A, Type B, Type C.
  • Pledge Kind Task (440–560 mm): spans no EN 1335-1:2020 Type in full.
  • Flexiform Equity (mesh back) (480–570 mm): spans no EN 1335-1:2020 Type in full.
  • Herman Miller Aeron (406–521 mm): spans Type B, Type C.
  • Herman Miller Embody (406–521 mm): spans Type B, Type C.
  • Herman Miller Sayl (406–521 mm): spans Type B, Type C.

That is not proof of non-compliance. Makers measure in different ways, many sell low or high gas lifts, and some certificates are for the 2000 edition, whose Type A range was 420–510 mm. Pledge's Kind Task, for example, cites BS EN 1335-1:2000. It does mean that 4 of the 8 chairs listed start at 440 mm or more, which our height calculator matches to a stature of about 163 cm in flat shoes; shorter people would need a footrest. If that is you, ask the dealer for the low gas lift, and read our guide to chairs for shorter people. For what each EN 1335 Type means, see EN 1335 explained.

How to buy a British-made chair

  • In the UK: Herman Miller sells through its own UK store, where the Aeron was £1,219 on 20 October 2026. Every other maker here works through dealers, so ask for a written quote naming the model code and gas lift.
  • From the EU: a UK-made chair pays no customs duty if it meets the UK–EU rules of origin and the seller supplies the origin statement. You still pay import VAT at your own country's rate, often with a carrier's clearance fee. The details, and your consumer rights on both sides, are in buying across borders.
  • Warranty: terms vary widely. Herman Miller quotes 12 years on its main task chairs, Flexiform 10 years on the Equity, and Verco and Torasen 5 years. Compare them with your legal rights in warranty and guarantee.

Questions buyers ask

Which office chair brands are made in the UK?

Makers that name a UK factory on their own websites include Herman Miller (Melksham), Orangebox (Hengoed and Parc Nantgarw, Wales), Boss Design (Dudley), Pledge (Leighton Buzzard), Flexiform (Bradford), PSI Seating (Blackburn) and Chairplan (Hertfordshire). Verco and the Senator Group state UK manufacturing at company level only.

Are Orangebox chairs made in the UK?

Orangebox was founded on the Hengoed factory in South Wales, where Steelcase had built Giroflex chairs, and has expanded to Parc Nantgarw. Orangebox now appears in Steelcase’s own list of brands. Its current Do page does not print a country of manufacture.

Do I pay customs duty on a UK-made chair delivered to the EU?

Not if the goods meet the UK–EU rules of origin and the seller provides the origin statement: then the tariff is zero. Import VAT at your country’s rate is due either way, and carriers may add a clearance fee.
