§1Fit

Fit comes before brand

A chair only works if its seat reaches the height your legs need. EN 1335-1:2020 defines four chair Types by the range they must cover; manufacturers publish their own ranges. Put the two side by side and the differences are larger than the price tags suggest.

Head to head

  • Herman Miller Aeron vs Steelcase Leap

The two chairs solve fit differently. The Aeron comes in three sizes with a fixed seat depth; the Leap is one size with an adjustable seat. For Europe, the Leap is made in Sarrebourg, France and declares EN 1335-1:2020, while the Aeron is made in Melksham, UK, and declares BIFMA testing.

  • Herman Miller Aeron vs Embody

Both are Herman Miller chairs built in Melksham for the European market, both with Europe-scope EPDs and 12-year warranties. The practical difference in the data is fit: Embody has an adjustable seat depth in one size, while the Aeron uses three sizes with a fixed depth each. On the standard cylinder both reach 406–521 mm.

  • Steelcase Leap vs Gesture

Both chairs are made in Sarrebourg, France, both declare EN 1335-1:2020 and EN 1335-2, and both carry Steelcase’s 12-year mechanism warranty. The published differences are in lumbar adjustment, seat range and price.

  • Herman Miller Aeron vs Mirra 2

The Mirra 2 offers seat depth as an option, which the Aeron does not have at all; the Aeron answers fit with sizes. Herman Miller publishes a Europe-scope EPD and a European plant for the Aeron but not for the Mirra 2.

  • Herman Miller Embody vs Steelcase Gesture

The Gesture is made in France and declares EN 1335; the Embody is made in the UK, with a Europe-scope EPD and BIFMA testing.
