Office chairs for tall people

Above about 1.90 m, the standard ranges run out. Here's the seat height you need and which chairs publish enough of it.

Updated By The Best Office Chairs Europe editorial team10 sources

At 190 cm you need a seat of about 510 mm; at 200 cm about 535 mm. EN 1335 Type A chairs only have to reach 520 mm and Type Ax 540 mm, so check the published maximum. In our register the IKEA MARKUS (570 mm), IKEA JÄRVFJÄLLET (560 mm) and HÅG Futu Mesh 1100 (550 mm) go highest.

Popliteal height ≈ 0.255 × stature (Pheasant and Haslegrave, Bodyspace) plus 25 mm for shoes. Taller people in that dataset have relatively longer lower legs, so the true figure may be a centimetre higher. For your own number, use the height calculator.

Not a task chair, but worth knowing: the HÅG Capisco saddle chair publishes 460–640 mm on its standard lift, with a taller lift available, which suits high desks and standing-height work.

Seat depth matters as much as height

Long thighs need a deep seat, or you sit on the front edge and lose the backrest. EN 1335-1 Type A seats adjust over at least 425–450 mm. These task chairs publish a seat depth reaching 470 mm or more:

Other checks for tall users

  • Backrest height and headrest. A taller back or an optional headrest matters if you recline. The adjustments table on each profile shows which have a headrest option.
  • Armrest height. Type A armrests must reach 290 mm above the seat; long upper arms may need the top of that range.
  • Desk height. At a fixed 72–75 cm desk, a very high seat can leave your legs cramped under the desk; a height-adjustable desk solves both.
  • Weight rating. Taller often means heavier: see office chairs for heavier people.

Questions buyers ask

What seat height does a 2 m tall person need?

Using the Bodyspace ratio of 0.255 × stature plus 25 mm for shoes, about 535 mm. That is above the EN 1335 Type A maximum of 520 mm and close to the Type Ax maximum of 540 mm, so look for a chair whose published range reaches it, or a taller gas lift.

Which office chairs go highest?

In our register, the highest published standard ranges are: IKEA MARKUS (570 mm), IKEA JÄRVFJÄLLET (560 mm), HÅG Futu Mesh 1100 (550 mm), Löffler Figo Air (1N) (550 mm). Several makers offer taller gas lifts as options.
