Best Office Chairs Europe

Sustainable office chairs, by the numbers

The greenest chair is usually the one that lasts and gets repaired. Here is how to read the paperwork that claims more.

Updated By The Best Office Chairs Europe editorial team13 sources

Look for three things, in this order: a long warranty with published spare parts (the chair will last), a third-party EPD (its footprint is measured and checked), and a take-back or refurbishment route (it gets a second life). Ecolabels such as the EU Ecolabel, Blauer Engel or Möbelfakta add checks on materials and chemicals.

15 of the 38 chairs in our register have a third-party EPD.

Life cycle of an office chair Six stages in a loop: Materials (EPD (EN 15804) · recycled content), Production (ISO 14001 · plant location), Use (warranty · durability tests), Repair (spare parts · service manuals), Take-back (refurbish · remanufacture), End of life (disassembly · recyclability). Materials EPD (EN 15804) · recycled content Production ISO 14001 · plant location Use warranty · durability tests Repair spare parts · service manuals Take-back refurbish · remanufacture End of life disassembly · recyclability One chair, several lives
Where each kind of sustainability evidence applies. Repair and take-back (highlighted) are where a chair's life is extended.

What counts as evidence?

  • EPD (Environmental Product Declaration). A third-party verified life-cycle report under ISO 14025, in Europe usually to EN 15804 via programmes such as the International EPD System, EPD-Norge or IBU. It reports numbers (for example, the HÅG Capisco 8106 EPD gives GWP A1-A3 32.87 kg CO2e (8106)). It does not grade the product.
  • Self-published environmental sheets. Wilkhahn's "Environmental Product Information", Sedus's internally reviewed LCA sheets and Dauphin's declarations are useful, but not independently verified. We do not count them as EPDs.
  • Label vs claim. "Cradle to Cradle principle" (Profim) or "climate neutral company" are company statements; Cradle to Cradle Certified is a third-party certification with Bronze to Platinum levels.

Recycled-content figures are not comparable across makers: some refer to the whole chair, some to one declared configuration in an EPD, some to one material. Read the profile notes before ranking on them.

Who takes old chairs back?

  • Interstuhl: Products returned after use are collected and passed to certified waste companies; Interstuhl states about 20% recycled content and about 98% recyclability.
  • Wilkhahn: Guarantees to take back all products at end of life at Bad Münder or to recycle them locally; general overhauls are usually done at Bad Münder.
  • Sedus: "Disused products are taken back by agreement."
  • Vitra: Vitra Circle: take-back, reconditioning and sale of used furniture through contract channels and Vitra Circle Stores.
  • Löffler: No formal take-back programme found; Löffler states its furniture is at least 97% recyclable.
  • Dauphin: No formal take-back programme found. Modular design: parts over 50 g are marked, and Indeed can be dismantled in about five minutes.
  • Flokk (HÅG, RH): No formal take-back or remanufacturing programme found on the pages we checked.
  • Kinnarps: Refurbishment, renovation and upgrades on site or in a service truck; help with recycling; refurbished furniture sold in the Kinnarps online store.
  • Varier: No take-back programme found.
  • Steelcase: "Circular by Steelcase: Remade": chairs remanufactured at Sarrebourg (Please, Think, Reply and others) with a 5-year warranty.
  • Haworth: Haworth Second Life in the EU: reupholstery and restoration, take-back for recycling, pre-loved chairs and donation. Fern and Zody are listed as preferred products.
  • Herman Miller: No Herman Miller-run take-back or refurbishment programme for Europe found. Aeron Refurbished and rePurpose are US and Canada only.
  • Humanscale: A "Refreshed" circularity page exists on the UK site but does not say the programme is offered there.

Buying a second-hand chair is often the lowest-impact option of all: see refurbished office chairs in Europe, and keep yours going with repair and spare parts.

What is EU law changing?

  • Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU) 2024/1781. Furniture is one of the priority product groups in the first ESPR working plan (2025–2030), with an indicative adoption year of 2028. There are no furniture ecodesign rules yet; durability, repairability or a digital product passport would only follow a delegated act.
  • Right to Repair Directive (EU) 2024/1799. Its duties on producers to repair apply only to the products in its Annex II, which does not include furniture. Its change to consumer law does apply: from 31 July 2026, if you choose repair as the remedy for a defect, the seller's liability is extended once by 12 months.

Questions buyers ask

Can an office chair be recycled?

Largely, if it is taken apart. Makers publish recyclability figures such as about 98% (Interstuhl), at least 97% (Löffler) and at least 90% of material normally (Wilkhahn). Several makers take chairs back: Wilkhahn guarantees take-back at end of life, Haworth runs Second Life in the EU, Vitra runs Vitra Circle, and Steelcase remanufactures some models at Sarrebourg.

What is an EPD for an office chair?

An Environmental Product Declaration is a third-party verified report of a life-cycle assessment, written to ISO 14025 and, in Europe, usually EN 15804. It reports figures such as the carbon footprint; it is not a pass-or-fail label. Self-published "environmental product information" sheets are not EPDs.

Do office chairs have the EU Ecolabel?

Some do. The EU Ecolabel furniture criteria (Decision (EU) 2016/1332, valid to 31 December 2029) include office chairs. In our register, HÅG links an EU Ecolabel certificate from its Capisco and SoFi pages and Kinnarps holds a licence; we could not count all certified chairs because the EU catalogue was unavailable.
