Office chair warranties and your EU legal guarantee
A 12-year warranty and a 2-year guarantee are not the same promise, and they come from different companies. Here is how they stack up.
Updated By The Best Office Chairs Europe editorial team11 sources
Every chair bought from a business in the EU comes with a legal guarantee of at least two years, owed by the seller. On top of that, most makers give a voluntary warranty: from 2 years (Vitra ID Mesh) to 10–12 years (Interstuhl, HÅG, Haworth, Herman Miller, Steelcase on mechanisms) and 30 years on mechanics (Löffler).
The warranty can add to your rights, never reduce them.
Two different promises
| Legal guarantee | Manufacturer warranty | |
|---|---|---|
| Who owes it | The seller | The maker (or whoever issues it) |
| Length | At least 2 years from delivery; longer in some countries | Whatever the terms say |
| What it covers | Any lack of conformity present at delivery | What the terms list: often frames and mechanisms longer than upholstery |
| Cost to you | Free remedies: repair or replacement, then price reduction or refund | May exclude labour or transport |
| Proof | Defects in the first year are presumed present at delivery (two years in some countries) | As the terms say |
How the legal guarantee works
- Two years minimum (Art. 10, Directive 2019/771). Member states may set longer periods.
- Burden of proof (Art. 11). A defect that appears within one year is presumed to have existed at delivery; member states may extend this to two years.
- Remedies (Art. 13). You choose repair or replacement unless that is impossible or disproportionate; then a price reduction or ending the contract. Not for minor defects.
- Repair bonus (from 31 July 2026). If you choose repair, the seller's liability is extended once by 12 months (Directive 2024/1799).
- Cross-border. The same minimum applies when you buy from a seller in another EU country. Claim against the seller, not the brand.
Brand warranties compared
| Maker | Years | Terms, as published |
|---|---|---|
| Interstuhl | 10 | 10 years on all products and spare parts. |
| Wilkhahn | 5 | EU guarantee policy (January 2024): 5 years on bases, frames, shells and mechanisms; 2 years on gas lifts, castors, armrest functions, adjustments and upholstery. Normal use is defined as 10 hours a day. |
| Sedus | 5 | 5 years on se:motion and se:flex (product pages and shop). |
| Vitra | 2 | The ID Mesh passport states a general two-year warranty. |
| Löffler | 30 | 30 years on mechanics and 10 years on fabrics for chairs bought since 1 January 2015, for use up to 8 hours a day. |
| Dauphin | 5 | Indeed data sheet: 5-year guarantee according to Dauphin’s terms. |
| Flokk (HÅG, RH) | 10 | HÅG and RH: 10 years for use up to 9 hours a day; 5 years for longer or 24/7 use. Labour and transport are not covered. Default maximum user weight: HÅG 110 kg, RH 150 kg, unless stated otherwise for a model. |
| Kinnarps | – | Standard warranty years not found on the pages we checked. |
| Varier | 10 | Registered chairs: 10 years on wooden and polypropylene parts. Registration is required; other parts are not covered. |
| Steelcase | 12 | Global Products Warranty (February 2026): lifetime on frames and shells, 12 years on mechanisms for Leap, Gesture, Series 2, Karman and Please. The business warranty excludes consumer retail sales; consumer terms differ by store. |
| Haworth | 10 | 10 years on Haworth’s ergonomic office chairs in EMEA (seating comparison, 2025). |
| Herman Miller | 12 | 12 years, 3 shifts for Aeron, Embody, Sayl and Cosm; 12 years for Mirra 2 and Setu (EMEA product sheets). |
| Humanscale | 15 | Freedom: 15 years (international brochure, undated). |
| IKEA | 10 | Office furniture guarantee covering MARKUS, JÄRVFJÄLLET and other office chairs: defects in material, workmanship and function, for home and business use. |
The fine print worth reading
- Hours of use. Flokk's 10 years apply up to 9 hours a day (5 years beyond); Wilkhahn defines normal use as 10 hours and excludes multi-shift use; Löffler's 30 years assume up to 8 hours.
- Parts vs labour. Flokk covers parts but not labour or transport. Herman Miller's EU store says its 12-year warranty "includes parts and labour", with limited exceptions.
- Different lengths for different parts. Wilkhahn: 5 years on frames and mechanisms, 2 on gas lifts, castors and upholstery. Löffler: 30 on mechanics, 10 on fabrics. Steelcase: lifetime on the frame, 12 years on mechanisms.
- Business vs consumer. Steelcase's global warranty states it excludes consumer retail sales; consumer purchases fall under the store's terms.
- Registration. Varier's 10 years apply only to registered chairs, and only to wooden and polypropylene parts.
- User weight. Warranties often assume a maximum user weight: Flokk's defaults are 110 kg for HÅG and 150 kg for RH. Haworth rates Fern and Zody up to 150 kg but warranties them for users up to 145 kg.
What about second-hand chairs?
A used chair bought from a business is still covered by the legal guarantee. Member states may allow the seller and buyer to agree a shorter period for second-hand goods, but not less than one year (Art. 10(6), Directive 2019/771). The 14-day withdrawal right also applies to online purchases from a business: none of the exceptions in Article 16 of the Consumer Rights Directive covers second-hand goods, except public auctions. Buying from a private individual gives you neither. In a 2025 sweep of 356 online second-hand traders, the European Commission and national authorities found 57% did not respect the one-year minimum. Questions buyers ask
What is the warranty on a Steelcase Leap in Europe?
Steelcase’s Global Products Warranty (February 2026) gives lifetime cover on the frame and shell and 12 years on mechanisms for the Leap. That business warranty excludes consumer retail sales, which are covered by the store’s own consumer terms. Your two-year legal guarantee from the seller applies either way.
Does a 12-year warranty replace my 2-year legal guarantee?
No. A manufacturer’s warranty is a voluntary extra. Under Directive 2019/771 a commercial guarantee can never exclude or reduce your legal rights against the seller, and its statement must say so.
