How the calculation works
The right seat height puts your thighs about level, knees at roughly 90° and feet flat on the floor: the reference posture EN 1335-1:2020 uses to set its dimensions. That height is your popliteal height (floor to the underside of the thigh behind the knee, barefoot) plus whatever your shoes add.
- Popliteal height from stature. In Pheasant and Haslegrave's Bodyspace tables for British adults, popliteal height is 0.252–0.263 of stature for men and 0.245–0.260 for women across the 5th to 95th percentiles. We use the average of the two medians, 0.255, and show the 0.245–0.263 spread as a range.
- Shoe allowance. The same source uses about 25 mm for men's shoes and 45 mm for women's. Pick what you actually wear at your desk.
- Compare with ranges. EN 1335 measures seat height on a seat loaded with a 64 kg template, and manufacturers usually quote the same loaded height, so the comparison is like for like.
Worked examples, flat shoes: 151 cm → about 410 mm, below the Type B and C minimums; 175 cm → about 471 mm, inside every Type; 192 cm → about 515 mm, which only Types A and Ax reach. For reference, the Bodyspace tables give median statures of 174.5 cm for men and 162 cm for women.
What this calculator cannot tell you
- It estimates from average body proportions. If your legs are long or short for your height, measure instead: sit with your thigh level and measure from the floor to the underside of your thigh just behind the knee, then add your shoes.
- It checks seat height only. Seat depth matters just as much: you should be able to sit back against the backrest without the seat edge pressing behind your knees. See chairs for shorter people and for taller people.
- Your desk height sets limits too. If the seat height that suits your legs leaves the desk too high, raise the seat and use a footrest, or lower the desk.
Questions buyers ask
How high should my office chair be?
High enough that your thighs are roughly level and your feet rest flat on the floor. A common rule is seat height ≈ popliteal height (floor to the back of the knee) plus a shoe allowance. Using the Bodyspace ratio of 0.255 × stature and 25 mm for shoes, someone 175 cm tall needs about 471 mm (47.1 cm).
What if my chair will not go low enough?
Use a footrest. The Display Screen Equipment Directive 90/270/EEC requires employers to provide one to anyone who wants it. Then set the seat height to suit your desk, and support your feet on the footrest.
What if my chair will not go high enough?
Many makers offer a taller gas cylinder as a spare part or option; the chair profiles quote these notes where published. EN 1335 Type Ax chairs must reach 540 mm.
