Steelcase Leap vs Amia
A side-by-side reading of the manufacturers' own European data. Where one chair's published spec is better, it is marked; where data is missing, we say so.
Updated By The Best Office Chairs Europe editorial team16 sources
The short answer
Both chairs are made to order in Sarrebourg, France, sold in Steelcase’s European online stores and covered by the same warranty.
On published specifications, the Leap leads on Spec Index; the Amia leads on max. user weight, lowest official price found.
The Amia costs €221 less in the euro stores and is tested to 160 kg; the Leap adds a headrest option, a five-position recline lock, lower armrests and a lower minimum seat.

Same source, same method: the store spec tables
Steelcase publishes the Leap's European figures in a 2026 brochure, but the Amia is not on steelcase.com's European site at all: its /eu-en/ product address redirects to the office-chair index. Both chairs, however, have a full specification table in Steelcase's own online stores, measured, the stores say, "according to the EN 1335-1:2020 standard using a professional chair measuring device". Read side by side, those two tables are the fairest comparison available.

How they move
Both chairs are Steelcase synchro designs, but they get there differently.
- Leap: Natural Glide and LiveBack. Steelcase says the Leap's seat "glides forwards with your pelvis when you lean backwards", so you stay close to the desk while reclining. Its back has separate upper and lower zones, with an upper-back force control and a lower-back firmness control.
- Amia: synchronised mechanism and LiveLumbar. The store lists a "synchronised mechanism", a tension knob, height-adjustable lumbar support and a flexible front edge. There is no seat glide, and the back locks only in the upright position.
Both have a flexible seat edge and 4D armrests, but the Amia's pivot has three positions (−28°, 0°, +28°) where the Leap's is listed as a range (±28°). For what a synchro mechanism is and how it differs from a single-pivot tilt, see the glossary.
Which suits whom
These follow from the published figures only; we have not sat in either chair.
| If you… | Favours | Why |
|---|---|---|
| want a headrest | Leap | The Amia has none; the Leap's must be ordered with the chair. |
| are shorter, or sit at a low desk | Leap | Seat down to 410 mm and armrests from 160 mm above the seat, against 430 mm and 200 mm. |
| are heavier or broader | Amia | Tested to 160 kg against 150 kg, with a seat 30 mm wider. |
| like to lock the back part-way | Leap | Four recline stops; the Amia locks upright only. |
| want the lower price | Amia | €221 less in the euro stores, £190 less in the UK store. |
| care where it is made | Either | Both are built to order in Sarrebourg, France, and ship assembled. |
Both chairs carry the same Steelcase store warranty: lifetime on the frame, seat shell, outer back, arm structure and base; 12 years on mechanisms, lumbar mechanisms, gas lifts, foam, arm caps and castors; 5 years on surface materials. Your two-year legal guarantee from the seller applies on top; see warranty and guarantee.
On standards, the Leap's 2026 brochure lists EN 1335-1:2020 and EN 1335-2. The Amia's 2026 user guide says it is "tested to EN 1335-1,2" (the German and French text adds Type B) without naming an edition. Both are above the 110 kg, 8-hours-a-day basis of EN 1335-2.
Fit: which bodies each chair suits
Seat height decides whether your feet reach the floor with your thighs level. The bars show each chair's published range against the four EN 1335-1:2020 Types. Work out your own target with the office chair height calculator.

Questions buyers ask
Is the Steelcase Amia cheaper than the Leap in Europe?
Yes. On 21 October 2026 Steelcase’s German, French, Spanish and EU stores listed the Amia from €1,019 and the Leap from €1,240, both including VAT, a difference of €221. In the UK store the Amia was £1,049 and the Leap £1,239.
Amia vs Leap seat: which is bigger?
The Amia’s seat is wider (490 mm against 460 mm) and its usable depth runs slightly further (430–495 mm against 415–490 mm), according to the spec tables in Steelcase’s UK and EU stores. Both list a 460 mm seat depth.
Does the Steelcase Amia have a headrest?
No. Steelcase’s store FAQ says “Amia does not include a headrest” and points buyers who want one to the Leap or Gesture. The Leap’s headrest has to be ordered with the chair; it cannot be added later.
Which is better for heavier users, Leap or Amia?
On published figures, the Amia: Steelcase’s stores say it was tested up to 160 kg, against 150 kg for the Leap. Both are above the 110 kg basis of EN 1335-2. Steelcase’s UK store says the Leap Plus, a separate model, is not sold online but through authorised dealers.
